SUMMARY:NEW DATE FEB. 1: First Baptist’s Martin Luther King event features State Rep. Poulos
DESCRIPTION:Due to the forecast\, this has been rescheduled to Sunday\, Feb. 1. \nState Rep. Christopher Poulos (81st Dist.) of Southington will be the guest speaker at the First Baptist Church of Southington’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. observance on Sunday\, Jan. 25. Feb. 1. For the 28th year\, the local church has hosted this special event remembering and honoring the legacy of King\, civil rights leader and proponent of non-violence. The church is located at 581 Meriden Ave. \nThis year’s theme is honoring “Public Schools.” The program will be held as part of the 10 a.m. worship service and will include the recognition of two middle school students for their excellence and commitment to improving their community at school and at large. A trio from the University of Hartford will provide special music. Town and school officials will be attending. A reception will follow. \nRepresentative Poulos is an educator and life-long Southington resident. He\, his wife Helen and their children live in Plantsville. Poulos currently teaches Spanish and serves as Instructional Leader for the Humanities at Joel Barlow High School in Redding. He was Connecticut’s 2007 State Teacher of the Year and was inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame in 2022. He has served on the boards of directors for several non-profit education organizations. \nOrganizers said this event is the only such observance for King that is held in Southington and it is vital for his legacy to be preserved and passed onto future generations.
